What happened. Gross domestic savings, the part of national income not spent on consumption, was 37.2% of GDP in 2025.1 That compares with 32.8% in 2015, a rise of about 4.4 percentage points (my arithmetic). The rate dipped to 31.4% in 2020, then jumped to 39.3% in 2022 and has eased since.

Why it matters. This is a recent national figure that adds up saving by households, companies and government combined. A high rate largely reflects strong commodity sector profits, especially during the 2021-22 period where palm oil and coal exporters enjoyed a rally. Regardless, this commodity boom generated sizeable investment across other sectors. If it continues, as the country saves more, it can finance more of its own roads, factories and homes without borrowing abroad.

What it means for you
– Households: the national rate is not household rate, which is nearly half of the national savings, but it is useful to mirror the national trend.
– Business owners: a deep domestic savings pool supports local financing, though banks and capital markets decide how easily it reaches firms.
– Worth watching: the rate might not stay above 35% as commodity prices and growth shift downward in recent months.
