my second job was more glamorous; operating a burger kiosk on campus.
when i arrived in campus in 1992, i was poor, has no money but for books, and no desire to return home. i was grateful having friend who kindly offered me his job ~ as he got busier with classes. he was selling burgers at night at the cafetaria.
happily i took the job and undergone a quick ‘induction’ to onboard me with cool techniques of making nice and tasty burger, special, banjo/egg, chicken, beef, hotdog. it was only an hour of training, but i ended became an expert.
i worked for 4 hours weekdays and 6-10 hours on weekend. and i earned a cool $10 per 4 hours.
during my tenure as night-shift outlet manager cum cashier, cleaner, cook, i learned a great deal about ‘governance’ ~ be honest with sales (the owner collects money in the morning), ‘customer relations’ ~ i was an introvert, but have to learn to smile and greet people, ‘environmental issues’ ~ where to throw waste, accounting ~ naturally, and strategic management ~ when to open and close, or whether it was good to open 24hrs during exam sessions at the risk of failing my own classes.
sadly, the job was not long lived. i quit the job immediately after i had to take more classes and i got a sponsor for my study. but the memory lives on in me.
those nights at the burger stall were memorable; nice greetings from friends, lecturer, or library close-rush hours at 10pm when customers are lining up for my burgers ~ it was awesome.
in retrospect, those were the days i enjoyed the most in university. i had a job that really rescued my day of pennilessness.
i love burger.
